Luther, just so you know, my post highlights the mistakes I made when sending submissions to the 13-Line critiques. I thought it might help other people avoid making the same mistakes. :-)

Sorry,

I think some of this is directed at the opening I posted late last night. I broke a couple of the rules by mistake and one of them was the Subject Line which you have clearly explained on the main page but above it is a hyper link (submission guidelines) which I clicked on automatcially. On that page, I did not see anything about puting specific text in the subject line.

The other was the italics I cut a pasted from an RTF document.

Again, it was late and others in my workgroup have been buzzing about this helpful service for a couple of weeks now. I was excited about fresh feedback and didn't search out the required details before hitting Send.

Thank you for your patience and attention. Should I try to resubmit the "In Their Image" beginning?

A note to people who are submitting 13-line critiques:

- Leave out the tabs/indents since they tend not to come through when the text is posted.
- Keep your paragraphs single-spaced, but add an extra blank line between the paragraphs since this will help readers differentiate one paragraph from the next when reading your submission.
- I’ve noticed that when I send submissions from my hotmail account the line breaks get a little messy. I’m not sure why this happens. However, remembering to put the extra blank line between paragraphs helps to reduce confusion when the line breaks go wonky.
- I just discovered this one myself… If you really need to set off a word/fragment/sentence in italics you can put an _underscore mark_ before and after the text in question to signify italics. <em>(Maybe one of the DG authors should verify that this is ok to do before people starting using underscores to set off text.)</em>
- "13-Lines" does not mean 13 sentences. It means the first 13 lines of text on the page. I think Katharine explains in detail why 13 is the magic number in the submission guidelines, so I won’t do it here.

… and I think that’s all of the un-asked-for helpful advice that I can muster at the moment.

You know, we could use a few more professional voices in the critiques -- Sherwood has been heroic, and Mad as well, but it would be nice if <cough cough> we got some different views than mine and Kevin's and the aforementioned Sherwood and Mad.</cough>

Katharine, you've been doing a great job with the 13 line critiques - especially considering that you've received a ton of them over the last couple of days! :-)

No problem, Kevin! I have finally figured out how to do the posts correctly. I may be slow, but I'm not thorough either. :-)

Which reminds me -- I need to send you back-up files of the new book.

Thanks for having taken up the slack for the con period, Kit. Though it's going to be a few more days before I can get into the swim of things. Post con frazzle and stuff-to-do.

Kate -- Oh good. I'll continue posting them to "general," then.

We are certainly getting a good number of story openings.

actually, I find these announcements quite interesting as a measure of what's going on here, and the evolution of the 13 Line Critique section.
