Kate, I just finished Shadow gate, just brilliant. Then I remembered that I can now read this post! I think you did a great job of protraying the different struggles and conflicts we all face, on a large, external scale (war, social conflicts, etc) and also on a more personal, internal level, for each character. What I really like is how each character seems so human, they don’t seem black or white (maybe a few do, the more “evil” ones who we havent gotten to know at all), but all the primary characters, and the secondary ones have very real traits, and have to overcome their own obstacles, as well as living in a society that is facing a huge upheavel, and also dealing with new aspects of a changing world (outlanders moving in, adapting cultural/social beliefs to fit in…this is something I deal with in all my travels with work!).
Anyway, great book! I could relate to it on many levels, and most importantly enjoyed the tale, even in the grim, darker parts. Good job!!
